A Cabinet secretary described this year’s SONA as an executive report presented to the nation’s stockholders—to us. And a colorful presentation it was, so much different from the past SONAs, with PowerPoint presentation and participation of different people—from politicians to athletes to military to ordinary people. Stories to break the otherwise serious topics range from heartwarming ones (that of the housing beneficiary who said that the title’s for his son) to those of hope (the call center agents she had coffee with) and victory (the Mt. Everest feat, SEAG medallists, beauty titlist, and Pacquiao). On the whole, SONA was better this year. (Enough for us to forgive her little comedy stunt.)
However, before July 24, some people argued the abolition of SONA. To that I disagree. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT SONA SHOULD BE DELIVERED TO THE FILIPINOS.
“Why not Abolish SONA?” Asked Amando Doronila in Analysis (Philippine Daily Inquirer, 7-21-06).
But, then again, WHY ABOLISH?
First, I believe that the Filipinos should be aware of what is happening in our country. They show apathy at present simply because they don’t even understand the current events—a big percentage of our population doesn’t even know what Charter Change is (just an example, but I disagree with it). Abolishing SONA, in a way, prevents PGMA from defending her side about the accusations given to her.
Second, SONA spells HOPE for many people. In SONA, PGMA shows the present achievements, what past promises were fulfilled, things like that. In this time of turmoil and crises, that’s exactly what people wanted to hear. Doronila may call it false expectation, a road map with a dead end, but that’s better than having no road map at all, to be walking half-blinded without any hope to be saved.
Third, SONA answers people’s questions. SONA is the best way for the President to clarify the issues arising in her administration.
Doronila argued about the President offering “stale fish” again, and about his hopes of a straightforward election next year. If he watched SONA, that was actually some of the agenda.
PGMA may or may not be proven cheating in the 2004 elections, but let’s face it: she is a good President (okay, maybe not morally, but at least professionally good). She knows when to hold back, but still, she keeps coming back. Want to impeach her? No problem—but please, not until you can find a better replacement.
Anyway, it’s not a question of who had done what but rather a call for everyone to be responsible.
A man like Doronila who believes that first things should be first must also know that every kettle must rest on its own bottom. Everyone has his own part to be played. Ergo, since prexies were supposed to give SONAs, that is exactly what PGMA had done.

That phrase means, "I think, therefore I am." It was written by Rene Descartes (a French philosopher). He was trying to figure out the world, and he decided that before you could know anything else, first you have to decide if you even existed or not.
I got that line in a book called "The A.I. Gang- Operation Sherlock" which is about a bunch of supergenius kids investigating about a secret project give to their equally genius parents.
Eventually,they learned that their parents were to make the ultimate machine-- not a programmed machine that can talk, or solve problems, or other tricks like that. They're going to make a machine that can think. More that that, they're going to make a machine that knows it thinks! A self-aware computer-- a computer that can say "cogito, ergo sum," and mean it! They're not just after artificial intelligence-- they want to bring it to life!
Presently, we live in a very highly-maintained society, where tasks became simpler and faster, a big thanks to different systems and programs.
These programs mainly uses a lot of clever keying devices, wherein preprogrammed responses were used-- everything's automatic.
But that holds true for humans, too-- a lot of what we do is automatic. The only difference is that we can think of new things. Maybe that is the center of the whole question of artificial intelligence-- does intelligence mean creativity, or awareness of that creativity?
We just have to remember that truly, artificial imtelligence upgraded our ways of life, but it doesn't mean that it has to be superior to man. Machine without man is still worthless, and in the first place, it is still the man that programs and, therefore, controls it.
Even the greatest computer program is prone to mistakes-- mainly because it is, in the first place, made by man-- who is basically prone to errors.
That is why no matter how great it is, a computer program is also vulnerable to different destructive viruses.
And that is normal-- what we just have to do is to be assured of our security by using anti-virus programs.
Also, people should also be informed about privacy issues and health concerns in regards to using the internet and their computer, for them to be fully aware of what to do in case they're already experiencing such situations.

*We are fully aware that in our fast-paced living, electronic commerce is imperative. This is primarily for the businessmen to cope up with their customers’ unending and complicating needs. If a business will engage in electronic commerce, specifically on the internet, it already follows that different facilities and systems would be put up. imagine someone asking you that... how would you feel?
i came across that line in a column in kerygma. in the article, the writer relates a story about a soldier and his childhood sweetheart. nathan (or is it newt? i forgot) went away to be a soldier, living catharine (not catherine, really). as years went by, catharine became engaged with another man, believing that nathan (or newt) had forgotten about him.
upon knowing about the engagement, nathan (or maybe it's newt) went AWOL and went to catharine's house. there he invited the girl to take a walk.
"a walk?" she asked.
"you know... one foot in front of the other.. through the woods.. just like when we were children.." nathan (or newt) answered.
so she obliged. now during that walk, they both had to decide: would it be a short walk for old times' sake, or a long walk to forever?

i've always liked different phrases (especially of different language), and semper fidelis was one of my favorites since high school (that's why i always uses issa_fidelis or semper_fidelis_girl).
semper fidelis means "always faithful" or "forever faithful". i've read it in a novel when i was in high school. in the story, the lead girl, Sari, was told not to use that phrase because "always is longer than forever", but still, as the saying goes, love outpowers...
it's just surprising to hear that phrase from our philosophy professor. i never thought that he knows it, but then again, he knows so many things, that's why i'm just happy that he... knows it. (i'm not making sense, i know!)

Presently, we seldom see people who never use the internet (or worse, heard of one!). We always use it in our day-to-day activities, basically for information and communication purposes. However, there are still risks involved in it, that is why it is still imperative for us to be assured of our security when it comes to using the internet.
I just wonder: what if there was no any telecommunication networks like the internet? Everything would be simpler, without the internet's different complexities. I'm learning, but still, you can't know all of it in one sitting. I prayed (selfishly) that everything would be easier.
But on the other hand, using the internet is so much help, especially when it comes to getting and sharing information and ideas. (Want an example? This blog!!) And judging from what we see nowadays, new programs and systems come out regularly, aiming to further improve telecommunications and networks.
Alas, selfish prayers were never answered...

i'm theresa soberano- issa to few- and i like reading espionage novels, if not sharing stories with my sisters or friends.
i enjoy the company of jolly persons but there are times when i would retreat to my own world and daydream (that's where i get most of my stories for the schoolpaper, hehe...)
i took accounting course because basically, i love math, but my childhood dream is becoming a flight stewardess.
i went to a national high school in the province, and i still try to get in touch with my friends there...
